Treatment of Giardiasis

Metronidazole is used effectively to treat giardiasis with moderate-to-severe symptoms.

Giardiasis requires no treatment if the symptoms are mild. The infection goes away on its own within a few weeks.

Medications are used effectively to treat giardiasis with moderate-to-severe symptoms. Most people respond to treatment.

Medications used for treatment of giardiasis include-

  • Metronidazole, which is the most common and most often recommended drug to treat giardiasis.
  • Tinidazole
  • Quinacrine hydrochloride
  • Furazolidone, which is used as an alternative drug for children as it is available in liquid form.
