American scientists have discovered
a type of ribonucleic acid (RNA) that helps reverse the life cycle of ovarian cancer
tumor to early stages. This discovery presents a possible new approach to
fighting ovarian cancer which is generally diagnosed in later stages often by when traditional chemotherapy no longer works as
Scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) have found a RNA called miR-429 may help induce the spread of cancer cells to convert back into a less invasive form of the disease. During the study scientists used 2ovarian cancer cells- one with characteristics of primary tumors and the other with characteristics of metastasizing spreading tumors. They used the RNA and found that it was successful in reversing the life cycle of ovarian cancer tumor.
Director of the Integrated Cancer Research Center at Georgia Tech, McDonald said, "We are hopeful that we have found an effective way to drive metastasizing ovarian cancer cells back to their primary cancer stage where they can be more effectively treated with existing chemotherapies."
