Prenatal sex selection services, illegal under the PNTD Act in India, had been offered by five doctors in Gurgaon, Haryana and they are now sentenced to three-year rigorous imprisonment.

Early in 2002, the then-Civil Surgeon of Gurgaon, N.K. Jain, had filed a complaint and in a surprise raid, which involved a pregnant woman decoy and Jain himself with a team of government doctors on the pretext of enquiring about ultra sonography on pregnant women, exposed J.L.Mahajan and his four accomplices.
Judicial Magistrate Archana Yadav found them guilty under Section 23 of the Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation & Prevention of Misuse) Act of 1994. Apart from serving the jail term the five have to pay a fine of Rs. 1000 each, failing which they would undergo a 15-day rigorous imprisonment.
