Professor David Kessler, an ex-commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has claimed that the ingredients in junk food are cleverly mixed so as to get consumers hooked onto them.
In a book called The End of Overeating, Professor Kessler says that manufacturers mix the components of junk foods in such a manner so as to make them 'hyper palatable' and hook consumers into coming back for more.
"It is time to stop blaming individuals for being overweight or obese," he said. "The real problem is we have created a world where food is always available and where that food is designed to make you want to eat more of it. For millions of people, modern food is simply impossible to resist."
He added that as more sugar and fats are added into foods, they stimulate appetite instead of curbing and lead to overeating.
