by VR Sreeraman on Nov 9 2006 6:42 PM

Former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad suffered a heart attack Thursday and was admitted to hospital where he has been placed under observation.

Mahathir, 81, had complained of mild chest pains on Thursday morning and was then admitted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of the National Heart Institute, the hospital said in a statement released by the official Bernama news agency.

Mahathir had coronary artery bypass surgery in 1989 at the same hospital and was last admitted for a checkup in December 2005.

The former premier was reported to be in stable condition.

Hospital authorities have said that they will release statements regarding Mahathir's condition.

Only immediate family members have been allowed to see him.

Mahathir stepped down as one of Asia's longest serving leaders in October 2003. He has recently made local news headlines after he criticised the government of his successor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
