FDA Officials Seize 5,300 Bottles of Chinese Spirits Laced With Viagra
China has a long history of brewing supposedly aphrodisiac medical drinks, traditionally produced with the help of animal penises. Chinese law bans the use of sildenafil and other such chemicals in food and drink. But, reports of illegal additions have previously made headlines. The Chinese food and drug administration has found that two manufacturers in Liuzhou were adding sildenafil and tadalafil to their baijiu products. They have seized thousands of bottles of spirits laced with chemicals used to make erectile dysfunction drugs such as Viagra.
Baijiu, or white alcohol, is a traditional Chinese spirit distilled from sorghum or wheat, with a distinctive flavor and high alcohol content. Authorities in the southern region of Guangxi said, "The makers called their products 'Kungfu Alcohol' and 'Life-nourishing Liquor', among other labels, and had seized more than 5,300 bottles and nearly 1,200 kilograms of additive chemicals."
