Energy Drinks may Harm Kids, Says Study

A new study published in the journal Pediatrics has warned that contrary to general perceptions that energy drinks are safe for children, doctors have the obligation of warning their patients that such drinks carry some serious risks which can also be fatal.

Researchers from the University of Miami's medical school say that energy drinks contain large amounts of caffeine or similar ingredients which can cause adverse effects in children including seizures, strokes or even death.

Lead researcher Dr Steven Lipshultz said that some of the popular brands of energy drinks contain four to five times the amount of caffeine found in soda and the rising popularity of such drinks among children, especially teenagers, pose a serious health risk to their consumers.

"We didn't see evidence that drinks have beneficial effects in improving energy, weight loss, stamina, athletic performance and concentration", Dr Lipshultz said.
