Stressing the importance of preventive healthcare, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people not to litter so as to make India clean.

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare J.P. Nadda stressed upon cleanliness and said it should be 'part of our daily life'.

The Prime Minister was speaking at the inauguration of a state-of-art, multi-crore research facility run by Baba Ramdev's Patanjali group.

Modi also found fault over what he said was the neglect of India's traditional forms of medicine like Ayurveda.

"While pre-independence period witnessed attempts to destroy India's indigenous and traditional arts and forms of healthcare like Ayurveda, a large part of post-independence period was spent in neglecting them."

The fortnight-long cleaning and hygiene programme under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan was observed by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development.

Modi lamented that the indifference led to foreign countries acquiring patents.

"The world now is not just content with curing diseases but there is more emphasis on wellness and preventive healthcare. The best way to ensure and promote preventive healthcare is cleanliness," he said.

Indian Youth Urged to Participate in Cleanliness Drives
NSS, NCC and eco-clubs will join hands with youth volunteers and help sensitise slum dwellers about safe sanitary practices and solid waste management.

"If we resolve to be clean, if we resolve not to litter or spread dirt and filth, we can save more lives than a doctor does. Cleanliness is the way ahead to make India disease free.

"Our ancestors spent their lives making innovations and turning these innovations useful for humanity. "We must never forget that innovative spirit and continue making efforts to develop our traditional techniques and methods," Modi added.

To ensure cleanliness and waste management, 10 iconic places in India are identified for observing international standards of cleanliness.

The Prime Minister remarked that he felt blessed to have prayed at the Lord Kedarnath temple earlier in the day.

He lauded the efforts of Ramdev in popularizing yoga and Ayurveda.

"I am fortunate I have seen Baba Ramdev from close quarters. I can say that his real wealth is his commitment to people's health."

While not much research was done in other fields, Modi said work done by the new generation in IT had indeed drawn global attention towards India.

Earlier, soon after his arrival in the Uttarakhand capital, Modi flew by a chopper to Kedarnath and then came to Haridwar.

Ramdev felicitated the Prime Minister by calling him 'Rashtra Rishi' and said the work done by him was winning followers across the globe.
