Dalai Lama to Undergo Medical Check Up in New Delhi

by VR Sreeraman on Oct 7 2008 3:29 PM

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama is to undergo a medical examination weeks after he was hospitalised with abdominal pains, his secretary said Sunday.

There were concerns for the Nobel laureate's health in August when he was taken to hospital in Mumbai.

He was discharged after four days, with doctors saying there was no reason for worry but that he needed rest.

"This is a follow up medical check up. He will be going to Delhi tomorrow for it," the Dalai Lama's spokesman Tenzin Taklha told AFP.

The Tibetan leader, 73, will be in New Delhi for a few days before returning home to Dharamshala, the northern Indian town where the Tibetan government-inexile is based.

Since his stay in hospital, the Dalai Lama has begun teaching again in Dharamshala but trips to Germany and Switzerland this month have been cancelled.

Many world leaders have recently called to enquire after his health, including US President George W. Bush.
