Career Thoughts Linked to Parental Relationships in Teenagers with ADHD
New study explores the link between negative career thoughts and parental relationships in teenagers with ADHD. The findings of the study are published in the journal The Career Development Quarterly.
In the study of 102 teens (76 //boys, 26 girls) with ADHD, male participants' dysfunctional career thoughts were related to their mothers' relationships. Those who had good relationships with their mothers showed less external conflict about their career choices.

The findings may be useful for career counselors as they consider the influence of family relationships on adolescents' career choices with ADHD. Future research should include the influence of gender and race/ethnicity on such relationships and focus on paternal relationships.

"My partners and I are very excited about the conclusions and implications of this study. We hope they spur more investigation to understand how dysfunctional career thoughts develop in relational contexts and help in evidence-based, contextually driven relational interventions," stated lead author Abiola Dipeolu.
