Benefits of Supplements Plus Hormones in Elderly to be Probed
The University of Adelaide has revealed that it will be launching a new study that will look into the benefits of providing nutritional supplements and small doses of hormones to elderly people.
Professor Ian Chapman from the university revealed that almost half of the elderly people who receive home care are under nourished while the government also has to shell out substantial amounts to provide the necessary care for hospitalization.

Over 200 elderly people over the age of 65 years will be taking part in the study with the university keen to rope in those who are still receiving care in their own homes.

“In older people there is a strong relationship between hospitalization and the later development of disabilities. If we can address this problem, the costs to the community and the individual could be reduced drastically”, Professor Chapman said, adding that the mortality rate among elderly could fall by 34 percent if proper nutrition supplements are given.
