Beef imports-Area of concern

by Medindia Content Team on Jul 3 2006 4:59 PM

American beef is thought to be produced by injecting cattle with many growth hormones that are extremely harmful to health. This has caused concern among EU nations that import beef, necessitating a ban on the import of beef from US.

A government expert and a pharmaceutical chemist, John Verrall has brought attention to the ill-effects of consuming beef from cattle that have been injected with a number of growth hormones. This is thought to precipitate a host of diseases like breast cancer, and even cause genital problems in growing boys. He attributes the alarming increase in breast and prostate cancer due to the unhealthy beef in the market.

But now, reports which seek to dispel the negative publicity for beef will hit the market soon, which comes as great relief to the farmers. But Mr. Verrall is pretty clear that he will not permit this to happen.

Mr Verrall said: 'There is clear evidence of the risk to human health posed by these hormones. Recent studies show that children are extremely sensitive to some hormones which can cause sudden growth or breast development, even at levels which are difficult to detect in the laboratory.”
