Attempting Hypnosis for relaxation

by Medindia Content Team on Apr 12 2002 5:15 PM

According to researchers at the Mayo Clinic, promote a simple form of self-hypnosis to induce relaxation and deal with stress. Hypnotherapy can be a great way to break bad habits like smoking, reduce stress and relieve pain. Its success depends upon why it is being used, and how readily the person can enter the altered awareness of the hypnotic state, say doctors at the Mayo Clinic. But most people can benefit from a simple form of self hypnosis.

This involves finding a quiet place, where you will be undisturbed (turn off the phone) and sitting or lying down in a comfortable position with your eyes closed. Then mentally scan your body, from the feet upwards, gently releasing any tension.

Allow your thoughts to flow, but don't focus on any of them. Now imagine yourself in a favourite place or somewhere beautiful and tranquil. With practice, you'll be able to call up this relaxing experience anytime, anywhere.
