Antihistamines are used to treat symptoms of allergic reactions. Antihistamines inhibit the action of histamine. Histamine is a chemical used by the immune system to help protect the body's cells from infection. Some antihistamines are found to be sedating and classified under first-generation antihistamines. Second-and-third generation antihistamines are less likely to cause drowsiness.
