1. Which doctor do I consult?

You should consult your obstetrician & gynaecologist.

2. Who are the women who have to undergo this procedure?

Women who have an increased risk of certain birth defects or malformations in the foetus. Women in their mid 30's and above, especially if its their first pregnancy.

3. Why is this test done?

It is done to test for any birth defects and certain other genetic conditions.

4. When is this procedure usually done?

It is usually done between 15 and 20 weeks of pregnancy.

5. Why is an ultrasound used during the procedure?

Ultrasound helps in fixing the positioning of the baby and the location of a suitable amount of amniotic fluid for draining.

6. Are there any risks due to the procedure?

There is a small risk of miscarriage (1 in 300 or less). Some women have cramping, spotting or leaking of amniotic fluid after the procedure.

7. Will the needle hurt the baby?

By using ultrasound during the procedure the doctor is able to place the needle to be inserted in a position away from the baby causing it no harm.

8. Will the procedure be repeated?

The procedure is usually done once. Very rarely, the procedure is repeated again. It usually happens when the doctor is unable to obtain enough fluid on the first attempt, or when the laboratory is unable to make an analysis of the fluid.

9. Where will the tests be one, do I need to get admitted?

No, normally there is no need to get admitted. The procedure is done usually on an out-patient basis unless there is some associated problem with the pregnancy.

10. What will the tests tell me about the baby?

The procedure tells us about birth defects, if there are any neural tube defects, chromosomal abnormalities. Genetic analysis through this is highly accurate but occasionally results may not be obtained.

11. How long does the results take to be available?

The result usually takes 2-3 weeks.

12. How accurate is this procedure?

The procedure is fairly accurate however a normal amniocentesis does not guarantee a normal baby. Please also remember that not all birth defects can be detected by these tests.
