Glossary

Ultrasound: A diagnostic imaging technique which uses high-frequency sound waves and a computer to create images of blood vessels, tissues, and organs. Ultrasounds are used to view internal organs as they function, and to assess blood flow through various vessels.

Pregnancy: Growth of an embryo/fetus in the uterus.

Fetus: Term for an unborn baby from the end of the 8th week after conception until birth.

Sonogram: The image produced by ultrasound.

Prenatal: Before birth; also called antenatal.

Tumors: A pathological tissue growth, characterized by uncontrolled multiplication of cells.

Dysplasia: Cells that look abnormal under a microscope but are not cancer.

Placenta: It is part of the fetus and supplies oxygen and nutrients to the growing baby.

Umbilical cord: Umbillical cord is a flexible pipe like structure containing blood vessels that connect fetus to the uterus

Amniocentesis: A procedure in which a small amount of amniotic fluid is removed and analyzed to detect various genetic characteristics or lung maturity of the unborn baby.

Chemotherapy: Treatment with anticancer drugs.

Arthritis: A disease marked by inflammation and pain in the joints

Cystoscopy: This is a test conducted to test the bladder and ureteric orifices.

Endometriosis: A benign condition in which tissue that looks like endometrial tissue grows in abnormal places in the abdomen.

Appendix: Vestigial tubular pouch of cecum.
