What are the Consequences of Leaky Gut Syndrome?
Some of the major consequences of LGS include the following:
- Nutritional Deficiency: The absorptive capacity of the gut is appreciably reduced due to LGS. This results in malabsorption of nutrients, leading to their deficiency in the body.
- Autoimmune Diseases: Autoimmunity, arising from a leaky gut, causes chronic inflammatory reactions, giving rise to various types of autoimmune diseases. These include rheumatoid arthritis, SLE, MS, thyroiditis, and Type-I diabetes mellitus.
- Chronic Infections: Infectious pathogens can continuously pass through a leaky gut that has failed to heal. This leads to colonization throughout the body, giving rise to chronic infections.
