Glossary

Insulin - like growth factor 1 (IGF-1): A growth factor made predominantly in the liver; its levels increase in response to increased levels of GH.

Insulin pen: An insulin injection device the size of a pen that includes a needle and holds a vial of insulin. It can be used instead of syringes for giving insulin injections.

Glycosylated Hemoglobin Test: A blood test that measures a person's average blood glucose (sugar) level for the 2- to 3-month period before the test.

Insulin-resistance: A partial blocking of the effect of insulin. This interference can be caused by hormones produced by the placenta or by excessive weight gain.
