The etiology of Keratoconus is not known as yet. Some sources suggest a genetic predisposition, due to the fact that it is seen running in certain families. It is also more often seen in patients with Down’s syndrome.

There is a strong association of Keratoconus in patients with atopic diseases. Studies suggest that excessive eye rubbing leads to progression of Keratoconus.

Keratoconus is a rare complication of LASIK surgery if excessive corneal bed is treated.
