Side effect(s) of Ferric Maltol


Review the side-effects of Ferric Maltol as documented in medical literature. The term "side effects" refers to unintended effects that can occur as a result of taking the medication. In majority of the instances these side-effects are mild and easily tolerable, however sometimes they can be more severe and can be detrimental.

Gastrointestinal: Flatulence, Diarrhea, Constipation, discoloration of feces, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, abdominal distension

Other Precautions :

1.Ferric maltol may increase the chance of Inflammatory bowel disorder (IBD), due to an increase in chances of inflammation (swelling and irritation) of the gastrointestinal tract. So, avoid use of ferric maltol in patients with active inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
2.Do not administer ferric maltol to patients with evidence of iron overload or patients receiving intravenous iron.
3.Keep ferric maltol out of reach of children as accidental over dose could be fatal.
4.Tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.
5.It is better to take other medicines at least 4 hours before or 4 hours after you take ferric maltol.
