Why is Suramin Prescribed? (Indications)


This medication is prescribed for sleeping sickness, onchocerciasis (river blindness) and some infections caused by parasites. It works by causing the parasites to lose energy, which causes their death.

When should Suramin not to be taken? (Contraindications)

Hypersensitivity.

What is the dosage of Suramin?


IV: Dose is based on patient's body weight and response to the medication.

How should Suramin be taken?


It comes as a solution for injection, to be administered by a healthcare provider into the vein.

What are the warnings and precautions for Suramin?

* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of liver impairment, allergy, decreased serum albumin level,malnutrition, pregnant women, children, elderly and during breastfeeding.

What are the side effects of Suramin?

Central nervous system- Fever, headache, tiredness, fainting, weakness, numbness and increased sensitivity in hand and foot.
Skin- Rash and itching.
Metabolic- Adrenal insufficiency and abnormality in liver enzymes.
Gastrointestinal- Vomiting, abdominal pain, nausea and metallic taste.
Blood- Decrease in blood count.
Liver- Transient increase in bilirubin level.
Musculoskeletal- Tingling and peripheral neuropathy.
Eye- Eye diseases and eye problems.
Genitourinary- Presence of protein in urine and kidney impairment.
