Why is Dolutegravir Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is an integrase inhibitor prescribed for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and pediatric patients aged 12 years and older and weighing at least 40 kg. Dolutegravir works by blocking integrase, an HIV enzyme that prevents the replication and lowers the amount of HIV in the blood.

When should Dolutegravir not to be taken? (Contraindications)


Coadministration of dolutegravir with dofetilide is contraindicated due to the potential for increased dofetilide plasma concentrations and the risk for serious and/or life-threatening events; hypersensitivity.

What is the dosage of Dolutegravir ?


For treatment-na�ve adults as well as treatment-experienced adults who are INSTI (integrase strand transfer inhibitor) - na�ve: 50 mg tablet taken once daily.
For treatment-experienced adults who are INSTI-experienced with certain INSTI-associated resistance substitutions or clinically suspected INSTI resistance: 50 mg tablet taken twice daily.
For children aged 12 years and older and weighing at least 40 kg who are treatment-na�ve or treatment-experienced INSTI-na�ve: 50 mg tablet taken once daily.

How should Dolutegravir be taken?


It comes as a tablet to be taken by mouth with or without food.

What are the warnings and precautions for Dolutegravir ?

* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of hepatitis B and C, moderate or severe liver impairment, excess fat, pregnancy and children.
* Monitor liver enzymes regularly.
* Tivicay should not be used in patients who have experienced a previous hypersensitivity reaction to TIVICAY.
* Appropriate laboratory testing prior to initiating therapy and monitoring for hepatotoxicity during therapy with TIVICAY are recommended.

What are the side effects of Dolutegravir ?

Nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, weakness, increased cholesterol and triglycerides, hyperglycemia, increased creatinine kinase and upset stomach or indigestion, changes in body fat (lipodystrophy), changes in the immune system (immune reconstitution syndrome), trouble sleeping.

What are the other precautions for Dolutegravir ?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. But if it is within 4 hours of your next dose, skip the missed dose and just take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose.

What are the storage conditions for Dolutegravir ?

Store at 25�C (77�F); excursions permitted 15� to 30�C (59� to 86�F).
