Buerger's disease is treated by a vascular disease specialist.
2. Is Buerger's disease the same as atherosclerosis?
Atherosclerosis is thickening of blood vessels due to deposition of cholesterol in their walls. Buerger's disease is mainly due to inflammation and clot formation and does not involve cholesterol.
Some medications and approaches that are being tried out for Buerger’s disease include prostacyclin analogues like iloprost, endothelin antagonists like bosentan, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene transfer, mobilization of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) from the bone marrow, or using bone marrow or peripheral blood or adipose tissue mononuclear stem cells.
