Wales' Chief Medical Officer Asks People to be Ready for Winter

Dr Tony Jewell, the chief medical officer for Wales has warned that old people must be ready to face a harsh winter and try to keep warm and safe.

Dr Jewell is due to release data that shows a massive increase in the number of winter deaths in 2008-09. He said that energy efficient homes were important in winter as they helped keep people well and warm.

"Because the weather in the UK is not predictable, we are not always prepared for the severe bad weather that we can, and have in recent years, experienced," he said. "Older people are more susceptible to illnesses when the temperatures start to drop. More than 87% of winter deaths involve people over 75, with the highest rates of death amongst people aged 85 or over."

People are advised to take flu vaccines, which are available free of cost at local GPs. Dr Jewell also asked people to avoid going suddenly into ice and sustaining falls there.
