Vinegar Could be Helpful in Weight Loss

by Rajashri on Jun 24 2009 6:58 PM

A new study by Japanese researchers says that vinegar may help in weight loss. The study says that ordinary household vinegar could turn on the genes that fight fat.

Tomoo Kondo and colleagues conducted this study on lab mice and gave them acetic acid or water through a stomach tube. Acetic acid is the main ingredient of vinegar and in recent studies has been linked to reduced blood pressure and blood sugar.

All mice were fed a high-fat diet in a normal manner. The researchers report that mice fed on vinegar developed 10% less body fat than their counterparts who had received water.

The details are due to appear in the July 8, 2009 issue of Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
