Many of the mood swings including clinical conditions like seasonal affective disorder (SAD) may be cured by light therapy, says the scientists of University of North Carolina.

Researchers had studied adults of age 18 to 65 yrs who had met the mood disorder diagnosis. Treatment was based on dawn stimulation for SAD, bright light treatment for non-seasonal depressions and conventional antidepressants for other affective disorders.

The results of the study had showed considerable effect of light therapy on SAD and non-seasonal depression. However the researchers are of the opinion that more researches are requiring finding out about the effect of light therapy while treating children. Also it is important to find out the safety of using light therapy. The study results are also not independent of the adverse effects of light therapy that needs to be looked into before this can be used as a treatment intervention.

The results of the study which was presented in the American Academy of Neurology 57th Annual Meeting, is also will be published by American Journal of Psychiatry, current issue.
