Warning on radiowave exposure

by Medindia Content Team on Aug 2 2002 5:33 PM

Experts at the electromagnetic radiation research center feel, that we need to learn more about the health risks of low level radiowaves. Radiowaves and microwaves play an increasing role in everyday life - what with cellphones, wireless computers and personal digital assistants, pagers, and text messengers.

We often walk past cellphone base stations, often unaware of their existence. In other words, we are bathed in an invisible 'electrosmog', says Raymond S. Kasevich, an expert on electromagnetic radiation and health writing for the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

Some evidence shows that low level radio and microwaves can cause biological changes in cells and tissues of the body. But the significance of these changes is not well understood. The exposure standards that have been set by electrical engineers in the past are not really appropriate to modern life, says Kasevich. Now we have to set new standards to reflect scientific fact and current everyday exposure.
