The Victorian Government has taken on the onus of improving the treatment for cancer patients, and as a first step, a new cancer agency with a $15 million funding will be instituted.

The detailed statement by the government, to be announced soon, during the pre-budget statement, will also outline the other medical initiatives on the anvil, along with details of financial assistance for the projects. Treasurer John Brumby has said that the main thrust of this cancer initiative, will initially call upon improved treatment measures for prostrate and breast cancer in women, which is becoming a common ailment afflicting women. Statistics show that there is almost a 1.5% increase in incidences of such cancer in women, each year.

Mr Brumby said "The new Victorian Cancer Agency will harness the breadth and depth of Victoria's cancer research while linking networks in metropolitan and provincial Victoria. The work of the agency hopes to improve cancer survival by bridging the gap between basic cancer research and cancer treatment services to make them more efficient."

The Government's pre-budget statement will also list out the funding of two major Victorian Research Institutions, to support its path breaking research on cancer treatment.
