Portable Lavatories Must be Installed on Mount Everest to Save Environment

Installing portable lavatories on Mount Everest would help in keeping it cleaner, environmental activists have suggested to the Nepal government. An environmental group has claimed that thousands of mountaineers, who set off from the South Base Camp in Nepal each year, would do a better job of keeping the environment clean if they have somewhere civilised to dispose off all waste.

"Human waste is a problem, of course," the Telegraph quoted Phinjo Sherpa, director of Eco Himal, as saying.

"I am merely suggesting that if we have public toilets they can be used," he said.

According to environmental activists, Everest is littered with the debris of past expeditions, which include human waste and corpses of mountaineers, that could even take decades to decompose because of the extreme cold.

Although no definitive figures on how much waste and rubbish left on the mountain have been given, yet the privately-funded Eco Everest Expedition has collected more than 13 tonnes of garbage, 400 kilogrammes of human waste and four bodies since 2008.
