Osteoarthritis Pain may be Relieved by Optical Illusions

Researchers from the UK's University of Nottingham have found that optical illusions can assist in pain reduction in victims of osteoarthritis. Scientists used Mirage technology which helps control real-time video footage of participants’ hands to create an illusory effect.

To evaluate the benefits of MIRAGE' technology in alleviating osteoarthritis pain, twenty arthritis victims about 70 years old participated in the study.

The technology was used along with physically pulling or pushing participants’ fingers. This created an illusion and participants actually thought their hands were being stretched or shrunken.

85% of the victims found relief using the MIRAGE system. 50% found relief from pain and one third said they felt pain disappearing temporarily.
