Obama Names African American as Surgeon General
US President Barack Obama is to name Alabama doctor Regina Benjamin as the country's surgeon general later on Monday, the White House said.

Benjamin chairs the Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States and founded the Bayou La Batre Rural Health Clinic in the southern state of Alabama, which has been repeatedly battered by hurricanes, most notably in 2005 by Katrina.

She was the first African American to become the president of a US state medical society.

Her new post would place her at the head of the 6,000 staff who are charged with informing US citizens about questions of health.
