A recent study has revealed a three fold risk of blood clots in women consuming a new type of birth control pill. Two studies found that pills containing a new type of hormone drospirenone, increased the risk of blood clots. The risk was three times pronounced as compared to the older generation of pills which contain a hormone called levonorgestrel.
Bayer’s Yasmin and Yaz, which are commonly prescribed in Canada contains Drospirenone as the primary ingredient.
"Prescribing lower risk levonorgestrel preparations as the first line choice in women wishing to take an oral contraceptive would seem prudent," the report said.
