A new surgical technique out of Australia may help patients with bowel cancer by reducing the time of surgery by 50%.
The new technique goes for a single small incision through a patient's belly button instead of the conventional five incisions through the abdomen. Only two Oz surgeon's are currently performing this technique. Calvary Health's Emilio Mignanell is one of them."For the patients who had undergone the single incision, the new procedure, their length of stay was four days," Dr Mignanelli told ABC News, adding that the new technique halved the time spent by the patient in the hospital in addition to leaving a minimal scar. "Nearly 50 per cent of patients will go home two days after their procedure, which is a lot different to what it has been in the past."
Dr Mignanelli also said that many patients were unaware of the technique, but were pleased when told that they would go home in two days.
