New Healing Gel Developed

A gel to heal and eliminate scarring after nasal surgery, has been developed by researchers at the universities of Adelaide and Otago and the Wellington-based company Robinson Squidgel.

Produced from shellfish and squid, it is used as a dressing after the nasal surgery. Peter-John Wormald, the University of Adelaide ear, nose and throat surgeon said that the gel had important blood clotting abilities and formed a coating over the wound to prevent scarring. Previously, sinus surgery meant scarring that would lead to blocked nasal passages needing further corrective surgery. The post-surgery procedure caused extreme discomfort and pain.

Infections like sinus headache and stuffy nose can be due to acute or chronic sinusitis, affecting the maxillary sinus and other sinuses.

But, now, Dr. Wormald states, "This new gel is placed into the sinuses after surgery and is very effective in controlling bleeding. The gel slowly dissolves over two weeks, allowing the sinuses to heal properly, preventing scar tissue from forming in the nose."

It is a distinct improvement on the earlier process.

Medtronic, the global medical technology company, has bought the patent for the nasal dressing gel for a sum that it chose not to reveal.
