 Mediclaim Portability to be Introduced

Mediclaim users who are not satisfied with the way their policy is shaping up can soon opt for another insurer without having to pay extra premiums.

The facility will only be available to policy holders who have insurance of Rs 1 lakh and above. Mediclaim portability is being recommended by the General Insurance Council, an association of non-life insurers. General Insurance Council secretary-general S L Mohan told PTI that all outstanding issues had been sorted out and it was recommended that portability be offered to consumers.

Under current rules, a policyholder is covered for a period of one year. If there is no claim in that year then he is entitled to a bonus in the form of increased sum and for every claim-free year.

But the bonus will not be available to those who opt to move over to another plan.
