MCI Increases MBBS Seats by 10,000
The Medical Council of India (MCI) has increased the intake of students by nearly 10,000 for MBBS course and also gave sanction for 66 new medical colleges. This decision came in view to improve the terrible doctor-patient ratio in the country.
After 5-6 years the total number of doctors will increase to 45,000 from the present 35,000 MBBS doctors. The MCI downsized the land requirement from 25acres to 10acres for starting a new medical college because it was difficult for organizations to find 25acres land in a metropolitan city. The Board has begun discussions with Army, Railways and Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) to start medical colleges to further increase the number of doctors in remote areas.

Increase in the number of seats will also increase the requirement of faculty members. To meet with this faculty crisis MCI has suggested that the retirement age be raised from 65 to 70years.
