Liver Disease Risk High in Obese Brit Kids

A government health advisor in Britain has warned than over half a million children under the age of 15 years are at a great risk of suffering from liver disease due to the fact that they are obese. According to governmental estimates, over 500,000 obese children are displaying signs which are usually associated with alcohol abuse and are suffering from non alcoholic liver disease similar to cirrhosis.

The Department of Health's national clinical director for liver disease, Professor Martin Lombard said that the number of children suffering from such diseases is expected to shoot up in the near future and warned that it is impossible to detect the disease until it has caused some damage.

“Liver disease is a silent killer, which is putting lives of thousands of our children at risk. We do not want to see the next generation dying young from a condition that can be prevented”, he said.
