The theme for World Population Day on July 11, 2014 is ‘Investing in Young People.’

The exponential growth of population over the past few years has been extremely alarming. A look at the population clock on the Worldometers website reflects the scary state we are in today in terms of population growth. Countries like China and India have left the third in line United States far behind. The Indian clock ticks faster than the Chinese; this is a race that India is all set to win, or sadly, to lose.

One question we all need to ask ourselves, do we have the resources to support the growing population? We have only one planet to ourselves, which is deteriorating every day. Do spend a moment on World Population Day, July 11, 2014 to think about this.

This World Population Day, the United Nations Population Fund advises nations to invest in young individuals, who amount to 1.8 billion of the 7 billion+ world population. These young include individuals between the ages of 10 and 24 years. A large number of these youth are uneducated, a frightening number unemployed. They are often victims of the environment in which they are born. Improving the quality of life in these individuals will improve the socio-economic condition of future generation.

Some of the aspects that can be invested into this population are:

Quality education
Employment opportunities
Health care
Promote healthy habits
Social security coverage

Targeting these individuals and improving their lives could ensure a better life of the future citizens of the world.
