Green Tea Linked to Decreased Blood Cancer Risk

by Rajashri on Oct 20 2009 9:32 PM

A new study by researchers at the Tohoku University School of Medicine in Sendai, Japan has found that drinking five cups of green tea daily will reduce the risk of blood cancer.

The study used a health database that stored the health parameters of 41,761 Japanese adults aged 40 to 79. Among them there were 19,749 men and 22,012 women. The researchers took into consideration confounding factors like age, gender, education, smoking status and history, alcohol use, and fish and soybean intake.

In the nine-year duration of the study, some 157 subjects developed blood, bone or lymph cancers.  The researchers found that those who drank five cups of green tea daily had 42 percent lower risk of blood cancer as compared to their counterparts who drank fewer cups or green tea or none at all.

The details of the study appear in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
