A 30-year-old female lawyer has undergone a sex reassignment surgery (SRS) in order to apparently avoid forced marriage.
The unnamed female said that she did not want to be subjected to the fate of other girls in the society, who are often forced to marry against their wishes.
"This society is mostly male dominated, where girls have no voice of their own ... I feel free now. No one can force me to marry. It is better to become a man to get rid of suferrings met by women," the Puri-resident said.
The women forced doctors at a private hospital to conduct the operation after threatening to commit suicide. She even produced an affidavit to the effect. Doctors performed the operation on June 29 to remove female organs and fix male ones.
It is being reported that the female lawyer was close to another girl and got operated so she could stay with that girl.
