EU to Make Emission Warnings Mandatory in Car Ads

Advertisements for cars could soon be forced to carry health warnings, with the European Parliament ruling in favour of plans for CO2 warning messages detailing vehicles' carbon emissions to be included in car adverts.

The new plans propose that a minimum of 20 per cent of adverts and marketing material should be given to facts about a vehicle's carbon emissions and fuel efficiency.

The European Parliament has sent out a clear message to stress that ads should give car buyers more details of the CO2 emissions of the vehicles on sale.

However, the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders has criticized the measure, insisting that the proposals were ludicrous.

"Are we going to see health warnings on holidays or other products that generate CO2?" the Mirror quoted an advertising chief, as saying.
