Ebola: 15-minute Test Trial Offered by Guinea

A 15-minute blood and saliva trial test will be in place for the deadly Ebola. Guinea will be offering this test and will be held in an Ebola treatment center in Conakry.

A 15-minute blood and saliva trial test will be in place for the deadly Ebola. Guinea will be offering this test and will be held in an Ebola treatment center in Conakry. This will involve a solar-powered, portable laboratory called as 'mobile suitcase laboratory,' to keep the components of the test at very low temperatures, and should deliver results 6 times faster than tests currently used in West Africa, the BBC reported.

The new faster method would be trialled at the same time so that the results could be compared with the current method.

Ebola is caused by a virus via direct contact with body fluids or infected blood. Scientists have identified five types of Ebola or Ebola hemorrhagic fever virus.

The project, led by the Pasteur Institute in Dakar, Senegal, is being funded by the Wellcome Trust medical charity and the UK's Department for International Development, and Dr Val Snewin, the international activities manager at the Wellcome Trust, said that the reliable new method "not only gives patients a better chance of survival, but it prevents transmission of the virus to other people."

The UK's International Development Secretary Justine Greening added that funding the revolutionary research would help come up new ways of diagnosing suspected cases quickly and hence save people from the pain of the deadly virus.
