Digicel Helps Raise Awareness On Autism in Saint Lucia

Digicel, leading telecommunications provider, supported the first ever Saint Lucia Autism Awareness Conference.The Saint Lucia Autism Awareness Conference was held on October 17th. The conference aimed to emphasize the importance of early intervention, provide support and resources to families, identify the needs, and educate families and people in the community on strategies to manage behaviors of individuals with autism.

Dr Delia Samuel, Organizer of the event and a parent of two young autistic boys, in commenting on the initiative said, “My hope is that the hosting of this Autism Conference will provide an opportunity for assistance for families, caregivers and educators of those special ones such as financial support, training, rehabilitative and health care services and that our St. Lucian society will have a deeper awareness and appreciation for those challenged individuals.”

“Unfortunately, as a country, St. Lucia lacks the awareness and resources that persons need to effectively care for children with autism. I believe the wealth of information which will be provided at the conference will be a step in the right direction for us as a country in addressing this growing epidemic.” added Dr Samuel.
