Dementia Expected to Rise Rapidly

A new study conducted by an American organization has warned of the rapid spread of dementia stating that more than 35 million people will suffer from it

A new study conducted by an American organization has warned of the rapid spread of dementia stating that more than 35 million people will be suffering with some form of the disease by the end of next year.

The report, released by Alzheimer's Disease International, has identified the low and medium income countries as the main area of concern where rapidly rising costs of treating dementia and the lack of required facilities to identify the condition has aided in the rising number of dementia cases.

"This report and all earlier studies indicate that the current number of people living with dementia is expected to grow at an alarming rate. Much of the increase is clearly attributable to increases in the numbers of people with dementia in low and middle income countries", the report revealed.

While the number of cases if expected to cross 35.6 million by the end of 2010, the report predicted that the number will almost double every two decades. It recommended that the national governments should view dementia as a national health priority and take steps to provide the necessary care for such patients.
