Compensation for Egg Donors to be Increased
People willing to donate sperm or eggs to infertile couples could be offered hundreds of pounds. The Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority (HFEA) are seeking views on whether payments should be sharply increased. The existing rules limit compensation for egg donors to a maximum of 250pounds, with less for sperm donors.

A ban on forms of familial donations like between brothers and sisters, or between sisters is also being considered. Shortage of sperm and eggs has worsened since the removal of donor anonymity in 2005 while the demand for fertility treatment is increasing.

Fertility doctors have backed this move but ethics groups have expressed concern that women's bodies were being turned into 'commodities'. Paying surrogate mothers had been banned but this move comes after a High Court judge ruled that surrogate mothers should be paid.
