Chromium Pollution Linked to Soft Drink Plants

Soft drink companies in India could be in trouble after a report released by a NGO revealed that the cola companies are polluting the environment in the surrounding areas of their plant.

Analysts from Hazards Centre collected soil samples from five Coca Cola and Pepsico plants in northern India and found that almost all the samples showed signs of pollution with chromium being the major culprit.

Chromium concentration was found to be higher than the 0.05 parts per million (ppm) limit in 59 of the 85 water samples. Some of the samples contained 100 times greater concentration of chromium than the permissible limits.

"We found that chromium was the most common pollutant. Chromium can cause skin rashes, upset stomachs and ulcers, respiratory problems and cancer", the director of Hazards Centre, Dunu Roy said.
