Child Obesity may Result from Parental Neglect

Dr Russell Viner and colleagues from the UCL Institute of Child Health in London have said that child obesity could very well be attributed to parents, who could be held guilty of child neglect.

"We suggest that childhood obesity becomes a child protection concern when parents behave in a way that actively promotes treatment failure in a child who is at serious risk from obesity and when the parents or carers understand what is required, and are helped to engage with the treatment programme," the researchers wrote in an article.

In a review, Viner and colleagues found enough evidence to link child obesity to childhood sexual abuse, violence and neglect, but did not find any studies that examined child protection actions and childhood obesity.

The researchers wrote that removing children from their parents may not help in the situation. The details are published online by the British Medical Journal.
