59-year-old Jon Matthews died just weeks before he was due to collect 10,000 pounds for staying alive. Mr Matthews was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2006.

"I was very sad when I heard he'd died," said Graham Sharp, who took the unusual bet on behalf of the bookmakers. "When he first approached us about it I was in two minds and thought we'd be accused of doing something in bad taste. But it gave him an incentive to keep on battling through the disease."
This time Mr Matthews had taken odds of 100/1 that he would stay alive until June 1, 2010. If he had managed to do it, he was due to collect winnings of £10,000.
