Canadian Youth at risk of heart disease

by Medindia Content Team on May 9 2003 8:21 PM

In a recent study made by Heart and Stroke Foundation it was found that Canadian youth are at a risk of being affected by heart disease.

About 30% of people in their 20s are overweight and larger propotion of smokers are between 15 and 29 years. About 80 per cent of adult Canadians have at least one of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease, and about 10 per cent have three risk factors associated with them. Its expected that thousands of Canadians will have premature deaths. Federal Health Minister said health ministers and partners are working to address the risk factors with the hope that it will reduce the number of heart and stroke victims in the future. With more young people putting themselves at future risk, it raises a question on the Canadian health-care System. Recommendations were also made on how health professionals and policymakers can address the growing problem.
