 Blueberries can Help Fight Obesity

While blueberries are known to be beneficial in the fight against heart disease and Type-2 diabetes, a new research has revealed that the fruit can also help in fighting obesity by cutting down the number of fat cells in the body by nearly 75 percent.

Lead author Shiwani Moghe said that blueberries contain a chemical compound known as polyphenols.

The researchers tested the effects of the compound on mice and found that a large dose of blueberries can cut down the number of fat cells by 73 percent while even the smallest dose saw a 27 percent decrease in the fat cells.

Presenting the study at the Experimental Biology 2011 meeting, Moghe said, "We still need to test this dose in humans, to make sure there are no adverse effects and to see if the doses are effective. The promise is there for blueberries to help reduce fat tissue from forming in the body."
